Airport’s shoe shining children's jail period extended

Jakarta’s Soekarno Hatta airport police have decided to extend the jailing period of 10 children accused of gambling and offering illegal shoe shining services at the airport from the original date of June 18 to June 28, a rights worker said Friday.
"The children were very disappointed to hear that they were not going to be released soon," Dhoho A. Sastro, director of the Legal Aid Institute, said Friday.
The 10 children, all under 18, were apprehended on May 29 at Soekarno-Hatta airport. They were then put into the children prison in Tangerang, Banten.
The arrest prevented them from undertaking the mandatory national examination, which was carried out in the first week of June.
According to Dhoho, the police have breached the 2002 child protection law, which stipulates that detention should be the last option in handling underage offenders. "The arrest was harsh and unnecessary," he said.
